Welcome to copdeducation.org.uk

This is a website designed to help healthcare professionals in Hampshire diagnose and manage patients with Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD).

COPD is forcasted to be the 3rd leading cause of death worldwide between  2020 and 20301,2. Currently in the United Kindgdom it is placed at number 4. We have a particular problem with COPD prevalence and exacerbations in Southampton City PCT. In Southampton City PCT we have been highlighted as the only hotspot for COPD on the whole of the South Coast in a recent report published by the British Lung Foundation3. This is due to a combination of high smoking prevalence and poverty. We have also been highlighted as an area where substantial improvement in diagnosis and management is necessary in a recent document from SEPHO4.

This web site and the presentation attached to it will help you with the diagnosis of COPD, the discrimination between COPD and asthma, and the management of stable and acute disease. Please use the navigation links on the left side of each page to access all areas.

A website designed for patients wanting to know more about their condition is now active at www.copdeducation.org.uk/patients

The new NICE guidelines for COPD were published recently and can be found at http://www.nice.org.uk/article.asp?a=91784. The major changes in this document concern pharmacotherapy (which do not differ much from local guidlines) and spirometry which differ significantly from previous versions; there are now 4 clinical stages all of which are based on post bronchodilator FEV1. The National Strategy for COPD should be formally published late this summer, the consultation document can be found at:
